The work of the excellent Slow Food movement has been highlighted today thanks to the unlikely intervention of Tory leader David Cameron.
Mr Cameron has been waxing lyrical about the need to eat real food rather than treating it as “fuel” and condeming our junk food society.
Slow Food is a non-profit, eco-gastronomic member-supported organization that was founded in 1989 to counteract fast food and fast life, the disappearance of local food traditions and people’s dwindling interest in the food they eat, where it comes from, how it tastes and how our food choices affect the rest of the world. An Italian journalist visiting Rome kicked it all off because he was horrified to see a brand new branch of fast-food chain McDonalds at the foot of the Spanish Steps.
Today it has more than 80,000 members all over the world.
So all very admirable that Mr Cameron was there at the launch in London’s Borough Market but what is that healthy snack we can see the politician tucking into? Yes, it’s a pie. Call Jamie Oliver immediately. Perhaps Wigan should be Mr Cameron’s next stop on the PR trail!
