A good week for restaurant critics

The court of appeal today quashed a controversial libel case, leaving food writers breathing a collective sigh of relief.
According to the BBC, judges have ordered a retrial of the 2007 case against the Irish News.
A £25,000 libel award was initially made to Goodfella’s pizza restaurant in Belfast, after a jury decided their food critic’s review was defamatory.
Journalist Caroline Workman’s review had criticised staff, the quality of food and drink, and the smokey atmosphere.
In a ruling that will be seen as a watershed for press freedom the court has now ruled that the jury in the original trial had been misdirected on whether the opinions were defensible as fair comment.
